As the name implies, six numbers are drawn from a set of 49. If a ticket matches all six numbers, the jackpot prize of at least CAD$5,000,000 is won. Launched on June 12, 1982, Lotto 6/49 was the first nationwide Canadian lottery game to allow players to choose their own numbers. Canada 649 is drawn twice a week, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 21:00 Local time.

The largest single jackpot record in Canadian lottery history was drawn on April 13, 2013 for a jackpot of CAD$63.4 million. There were four winning tickets. Three of the tickets were purchased in British Columbia, and the fourth in Alberta, Canada. On October 26, 2005 CAD$54.3 Million were won, marking the second largest Jackpot in Canada 659 history. The winning ticket, worth CAD$54.3 million, was purchased in Alberta CA by a group of 17 oil and gas plant workers. The Jackpot was originally estimated at only $40 million, but because of rapid sales created by lottery fever across the country, the jackpot increased to $54,294,712. An estimated USD 99.4 million worth of tickets was sold for that draw. The third largest jackpot of CAD$50.3 Million was drawn on February 21, 2009. There were four winning tickets out of which three in Ontario and one in Quebec.
