In Spanish, El Gordo translates to “the fat one”. Being one of the oldest and biggest lotteries in the world, the El Gordo started in 1763 by the Marquis of Esquilache. The old format allowed people to choose a combination of five numbers from 1 to 90. This lottery, one of the oldest in the world, was discontinued in 1862, but revived in 1985 with the introduction of the Loteria Nacional. The new format offered people a five-number combination from numbers 1 to 54 and the Reintegro number from 0 to 9.
